Oddy Mandocello

Oddy Cello Mandolin notably played by  Steve Knightley of Show of Hands is based on a ‘tourist’ instrument brought back from  Eastern Europe which had subsequently been refined by David into the classic it is  today.  See more about its history here.

OK, so technically its not a Cello Mandolin, a more accurate description might be a long scale length Octave Mandola .. but our clients and professional players of this beast have always referred to it as the “Oddy Mandocello” and the title has stuck.

They are known for their ‘presence’ and ‘volume’ and used by many as a lead instrument notably by our friends in the award winning band Show of Hands.

Broadly the instrument is the same scale length as a guitar (25.4”) and generally tuned GDAE or GDAD ... although technically its then an Irish Bouzouki !!

As played by Steve Knightley of Show of Hands.

“We have been playing David Oddy instruments for nearly 30 years and the Show of Sound is defined by them, in particular the mandocello has been responsible for some of our best loved songs such as Country Life and Roots.” Steve Knightley

A lot of variation and design styles !

"I've played many hand-made instruments over the years, and David and Nick's combination of construction and high quality materials is among the best in the business. There's also nothing that can touch their cello-mandolin in terms of unique sound, depth and songwriting inspiration!"    Ian Cleverdon of The Huer
